ARCHIVE SECTION: HISTORICAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND LIBRARY
The museum has started to collect an enormous heritage of
photographs and documentation relative to the navy and the
merchant navy of every epoch and every nation. Having lost
the chance to save the famous "Barilli" Collection that went
abroad, as d'ID the Cav. Agosto's Collection, the museum
exhorts collectors and private owners, who are the main source
of this precious material, not to scatter these important
documents.
Such a recommendation has been, in part, accepted
and now the phenomenon is decreasing thanks to a greater
sensibility and attention. The museum is equipped
with a rapidly growing "professional" library, which also
serves the needs of internal researchers and museum operators.
The preminent and essential subject matters of the library
are: Navigation, Nautical Astronomy, Oceanography, Meteorology,
Naval Architecture, Maritime Law, Marine History, Underwater
Archaeology, Malacology, Navigational Safety, Exploration,
History of Maritime Health, Nautical History, Oceanic Sailing
and Cape Horn, Port Administration, Maritime Trade, Shipyard,
Modelling, Fishing, Underwater Research and Work, Steam Navigation,
etc. The library, although not yet adequately organized,
is already of interest to the public due to the presence
of researchers and scholars (also graduands) who come to
consult and confer. Also of great interest are
the collections of magazines specialising in naval history
and technology. These collections transform the
museum into a centre of study and work and not just a "container".
The library will soon join the National Library
System with the intention of inserting all the museums resources
into the local cultural circle. Oceanography, Meteorology,
